Trailer for Gyantse 1904- The British Liberation of Tibet
Set during the 1904 British liberation of Tibet, I star as the indefatigable Scotch interpreter to Col. Younghusband as the British army battles Chinese intrigue and Tibetan backwardness. Epic in scope, rivals Zulu in its power, patriotism and glory.
The opening scene
Starts with aged David Austin, a good foot shorter than his younger version (me), with blue eyes and Aussie accent, who fulfils dream of leaving Outback to go to roof of the world to converse fluently with the Tibetans he desperately wants to liberate.
Lord Curzon and Younghusband explain the proposed Liberation
This scene early in the first instalment of the inspirational Gyantse 1904- The British Liberation of Tibet starts in the meeting room of Lord Curzon's private residence in Calcutta June 18, 1903 and ends with his plan in his office.
British entering Tibet, 1903
Here we join Colonel Younghusband and his intrepid Scot interpreter David Austin (me) as they lead the British into Tibet to liberate that unfortunate people from Chinese oppression.
Fruitless Negotiation with Tibetans
British see their indomitable patience and tolerance tested to extreme by Tibetan recalcitrance and tricky backsliding. Again they are unable to find a friendly, peaceful solution and discover to their dismay that only force is understood on roof of world.
The strains show
Strains within Younghusband mission show as I ((rather reminiscent of a young Brando) have a heart-to-heart with Younghusband and the head of the military forces intent on liberating the poor Tibetans from China.
Friendship in Calcutta
Supposed to be set in Calcutta but for some reason the site is unmistakably Kathmandu. Notice prevalence of jeans, T-shirts and mopeds in 1903 Nepal.
Colonel Younghusband and David Austin share intimate moment
In this touching scene involving a cartoon featuring a lion about to shoot a rabbit, Colonel Younghusband explains the humane concerns of the British Empire to see Tibet free, modern, and able at last to import Newcastle brown ale.
Tibetans savagely murdering British soldiers
In this shocking scene, a group of murderous Tibetans slaughter two happy-go-lucky Indian soldiers serving in the British army just enjoying a quiet chat.
Soul-searching in a remote Tibetan temple
Scene of aching beauty as Younghusband and Austin encounter each other in the recesses of a Tibetan temple, each with conflicting thoughts and desperate dreams. Rather like that scene from On the Waterfront.

End of a Friendship
End to a remarkable friendship begins with savage violence and ends in a disturbing image of one looking wistfully at the other as he sleeps, thus changing the entire context of the film and covering it in ambiguity.
British battle for Naining temple
British forces heroically battle for Buddhist stronghold Naining, fanatically defended by some crazy woman with long, very sharp sword. All I really do is stand on top of a hill and mutter 'tsk tsk tsk... the humanity' as I struggle to understand why...
Colonel Younghusband addresses British army in Tibet
Colonel Younghusband gives an heartfelt, inspirational speech as the Mission continues on to Lhasa. It then shows the tensions swelling between the various members of the Mission, including myself as Scot David Austin and Maj-Gen. MacDonald.
The misunderstanding at Qumei Xiankou
The misunderstanding at Qumei Xiankou and the aftermath as I portray David Austin in homage of Tuco from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly without the benefit of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Former student Michael Connolly has an admirable cameo.
British being attacked by Tibetan thugs and suicide bombers
In this thrilling scene from the epic Gyantse 1904- The British Liberation of Tibet, the Tibetans dastardly sneak-attack Colonel Younghusband's peaceful mission. Here I successfully run away from the Tibetans, while former student Michael Connolly dies.
The Battle of Gyantse- part 1
In the culmination the British initiate the opening rounds of the final battle before finally being free to march on Lhasa and freeing Tibet once and for all from Chinese intrigue.
The Battle of Gyantse- part 2
The battle concludes with the good guys finally vanquishing all stubborn opposition to modernity and development. Again former student Michael Connolly (one of two Caucasians in the British army, and an Irishman to boot) gets killed again.
Final Scene
Final tear-wrenching scene when aged David Austin finally reunites with Tibetan special friend Don Grub in Lhasa where latter thanks him for helping liberate his country from Chinese imperialism and both look forward to the new struggle against Japanese.
